Paint With
To be able to paint on targets you have to select a source object first, either in the viewport or from the list. You can create a new source by selecting a couple of objects and clicking on the toolbar source- button which will turn the active selection into a source :
You can also load a source from file by opening the texture library and click on load from file
which lets you extract sources from any 3ds max scene.
The brushsize of the paintbrush is measured in texture(UV) coordinates which range from 0.0 - 1.0 (or above for tiling). By default this is set to a small value so that only a single object will be created by the brush. Increasing the brushsize slightly will cause more objects to spawn around the brush. If you are only painting a single object you will have to use a brushsize >1 to paint multiple objects.
Holding ALT while painting will activate the eraser which applies to all the paint fill modes.
